Is it?

questionmarkToday I have a cold and nobody wants to be in the same room as me, so I’m spending extra time with my blogging friends instead.  Do make sure you have your antivirus software fully up to date before reading any further.

Having nothing much to do on a Sunday afternoon all alone, I started typing “is it” into the Google search box, and as usual, Google offered some helpful suggestions. Most puzzling to me were:

Is it down?

Is it Christmas?

It seems that people who ask Google “is it down?” are trying to find out if some website or other is down, or if it’s just a problem with their internet connection. If they think that Google knows such things, good luck to them. Why anyone would need to ask if it’s Christmas is beyond me.

Anyway, I carried on with my search query and got as far as “is it better to” before ever-helpful Google again prompted me with:

Is it better to be single?

Is it better to be alone?

Well, my heart goes out to people who are so lonely that they have nobody to ask such a question except a search engine. How sad, especially when it may (or may not) be Christmas.

After this digression, I eventually got around to asking my question:

Is it better to have a temperature when ill?

But found no conclusive explanations either way. So I think I’m just going to take a couple of paracetamol tablets and curl up all alone in a ball, feeling sorry for myself until my cold gets better. Maybe by then it will be Christmas?

  1. I agree with you, it is sad to be or even feel alone unless it is your intention. I pray that these ones are able to build friendships in their chat forums.

  2. I hope you feel better soon!

Personally, I like to have a “temperature” all the time. In fact, there’s really no way to avoid it. Perhaps they meant “fever” or “abnormally high for a human temperature” instead? 😀

  3. Too funny. I too have a cold, and an attitude to match, which drives my family very far away. I am inclined to curl up in a ball of self pity. Sometimes it’s the best therapy there is. Wishing you a quick recovery, unless you want to stay in your ball, and then, I wish you as much time there as you need.

  4. I think you need to learn the ancient art of Milking It for All Its Worth. If you have a minor illness you may as well enjoy it. I ask my husband for cups of tea in a weak voice, snuggle under the duvet with a good book, light a candle and just generally squeeze every last drop out. It is lovely to have an excuse to have a jolly good skive.

  5. There is actually a website that will tell you if a website is down or if it’s just your connection: . I’ve used it a lot, and found it through Google. ^_^ The other question… not everyone celebrates Christmas (big, wide world out there) so not everyone knows the date. As for the rest… well, it’s not for me to judge.

  6. Warm clear soup usually helps 🙂 Hope you get better soon, Steve. We don’t want you left all alone asking Google more “is it” questions!

  7. I’m not a doctor, but my understanding is that most viruses/bacteria prefer relatively cool environments, so your body tries to raise your temperature as a way to fight off an infection. So if you’re ill, it is better to have a temperature. It means your immune system is working.

Again, I’m not a doctor. Just a science enthusiast.

  8. I had a fever and was bedridden for more or less two weeks! Hope you’re feeling better 🙂

  9. Sorry to hear you’ve been under the weather. Hope you’re feeling better.

I’ve become far too familiar myself with paracetamol and ibuprofen lately.

  10. Hope you feel better soon!

  11. Get well soon Steve…..Even I am running high temperature now…..
